FIELD DAY 2009
WCARA Club Events Anonymous writes "Summary of Field Day 2009 Activities

Bob Fay - WB0NPN - Field Day Chairman

Here is an outline of field day activities for 2009

1. Before field day, we have moving day. This is Thursday, June 25. We have to move all of the equipment from the present room on the 2nd floor in preparation for the building renovation. All of the exterior facade and windows will be removed. Please plan on helping at 9:00am.

2. Field Day setup begins at 2:00pm, Friday, June 26. We will work until about 8:00pm, and set up everything except the station equipment and computers.

3. Operating will be on the south side of the Voice of America building (Tylersville Road side), to gain better visibility.

4. Antennas will be one beam mounted on a 27 ft ladder, two G5RV's strung from the building, an 80m wire, and a NVIS antenna. No balloon antenna this year.

5. We will operate as 4A, the same as in past years. This year, we will have additional digital equipment courtesy of N8VSI, and will operate one position as digital as long as operators familiar with the mode are present. One position will be CW, and the others flexible between CW & voice, depending on personnel available. The digital station will be responsible for sending the section manager traffic to earn the additional 100 points, and copying the ARRL field day bulletin.

6. Operating reservations may be made by contacting WB0NPN at wb0npn@arrl.net.

7. The digital station will also be the welcome and sign in location. All operators and guests are requested to sign in so we can maintain an accurate account of participants and visitors.

8. The digital station will have manual logs to use in case of computer failure, and the field day rules book for reference.

9. We will have a cook out Saturday evening, with the club providing dogs, burgers, etc. Bring whatever else you would like to share. KB8ZYE will furnish the grill.

10. Field day operation is from 2:00pm Saturday, June 27, to 2:00pm on Sunday. We plan to operate 24 hrs continuous.

11. During station tear down, we want to pack all of the equipment in boxes for storage while the building is being renovated. Please be sure to mark the contents on the boxes, and seal them with tape.

12. We have made several new publicity contacts, and we hope that broader coverage will result. We have also invited the township trustees, as in past years. Please make them feel welcome.

13. Due to family circumstances, I have to be out of town during field day. John Kerr, N8JK, has volunteered to take over management of the actual event. Many thanks for his help!!

First two moonbounce QSOs!
10 GHz (3cm) EME communications n8eci writes "On 15-April Mike KA8ABR and Jim N8ECI made WC8VOA's first two QSOs with Al, W5LUA in TX and the club station IQ4DF in Italy via a 10 GHz earth-moon-earth path. With only 8 watts of microwave power and the tremendous gain of the 7.2m satellite antenna, these QSOs were made over a half-million-mile path. Work continues on improving the antenna's feed system though waveguide matching and tuning!"

IS YOUR SCANNER QUIET THESE DAYS ?
WCARA Club News Anonymous writes "IS YOUR SCANNER QUIET THESE DAYS ? By : Jim Kimmel W8FEJ

If your scanner seems unusually quiet these days it may not be because of a reduction in crime, 911 calls , or a reduced frequency of natural disasters. More and moreof the local emergency services are converting to digitaloperation.. Even scanners equipped for trunking such as the Pro 2052 and its siblings listen in vain for analog signals which are no longer there. Is it time to go to Dayton or onto eBay and get what you can or even donate that “obsolete scanner to Goodwill? Not at all.!! Especially when a new digital scanner may cost approximately $400.00 or more. Radio Shack will print up for you a page or two of frequencies in Butler and Warren counties and other nearby areas which still use the analog mode. It might help if you make them awarethat you own a Radio Shack scanner and/or make a purchase. The manager seemed willing to print a copy from his store

The source of this information is Scancat-Lite ComputerAided Technologies. They produce “full featured programming software for your Radio Shack scanner.” The frequency list “sampleincludes about 60 analog frequencies in the VHF Lo, VHF HI, and 800mhz bands. The cost for the whole software package is $29.95. It may possibly be purchased from Radio Shack storesfrom their website, or directly from the information below. For a more comprehensive list of local frequencies see National Communications information below. Your scanner will come to life again using the remaining (and very active) analog channels in the Butler / Warren County area
